I was preparing a promotional mailing for my clients and I was sharing some photographs of a recent session of Julia, James and Lillianne.
This wasn’t the first time that I had photographed them — in fact, it was the fourth time and I was simply amazed at how much the kids have changed.
The last time I photographed them was at this same time of year in 2012. It’s like when we used to visit my grandmothers on our annual visit and she would remark at how much we had grown.
The old saying is that time flies. And when you have kids or when you photograph kids that point is reinforced virtually everyday.
But even then, it’s still easy to push it to the background — maybe as self-preservation — because the reality is that time is flying for us too.
That is why I love this work that I do documenting the lives of my clients’ families — the images that I capture and create will freeze time in effect and forever allow us to remember, even if our own memories do not.
I simply love this portrait of the three kids from a recent session at Salt Creek. We had done a variety of posed situations, and they were free to play for a while until we did more posed portraits just as the sun was about to drop below the horizon.
This was made as they were just playing in the waves (not bad for November, right?) thinking they were off the hook from being photographed. But that’s part of my sneaky master plan. I love to let them think that and then watch as they let loose and show me another side of who they are at this time in their lives.
I went back to our very first session and it was great to see them at those ages — so sweet and small and yet still them. Their personalities were clear then and now. But the striking thing was how much has changed in their appearance in just five short years.
It really made me thankful.
Thankful that I have clients like Greg and Courtney that commission me regularly to photograph their family. Thankful that I have been able to do this work for 30 years. And especially thankful that I am able to create treasures for people doing something I love.
There is still time for your session this year! Please contact us through the link below or nicki at paul f gero dot com.
