I was nominated by Cheryl Evans, a former colleague at the Arizona Republic and Will Austin, a Seattle photographer for the 5 Day B &W Challenge, so this is my first entry.
This photograph was made during Michael Jordan’s rookie season, in a game in 1985 against the Cleveland Cavaliers at the old Chicago Stadium.
I was “the early guy” for The Chicago Tribune, where I was on staff at the time, and by that it meant that I shot action for the first quarter in black and white and picked up the film of the main Tribune sports photographer (at this game it was Chuck Cherney) who was shooting color for the paper.
This was the early days of color in the newspapers and about a decade before newspapers would get into digital. Yes, it was old school.
This photograph ran in the state edition and was replaced for Chuck’s color image which was also of this same dunk.
